Guillard by guillotine and other UFC Fight Night quick hits

fightnight

Before I offer up some quick thoughts on the just finished UFC Fight Night 19 card, UFC president Dana White Twittered during the fights to say that Phillipe Nover “is sitting ringside and 100 percent healthy.” Nover was supposd to face Sam Stout on the undercard but suffered a seizure of some sort in the locker room about an hour before the event was to start. Good news, although it does put a big question mark on Nover’s future in MMA.

Okay, Fight Night 19. As good a free-on-Spike TV card as we’re likely to see. The headliner: Guillard by guillotine. Bet Melvin Guillard (22-8-2, 5-4 in the UFC) is feeling pretty stupid about now. Maybe even having flashbacks to his 27-second loss to Joe “Daddy” Stevenson at Fight Night 9. He was cruising to a win, beating Nate Diaz (11-4, 6-2 in the UFC) with strikes and takedowns and his head movement was pretty great until he served it up on a silver platter late in the second round and Diaz submitted him by guillotine choke. And could somebody please get Diaz a sandwich. He looks (and talks) like a meth-head.

Roger Huerta (20-3-1, 6-2 in the UFC) dropped a split decision to Gray Maynard (8-0, 6-0 in the UFC) to finish out his UFC contract. And what was up with Huerta’s hair before the fight? Maybe he should try some product, maybe a leave-in conditioner for extra body, especially if he wants to be an actor and model. The two lightweights swung wildly for two rounds and Huerta was close to being submitted – and having his shoulder ripped out of its socket – by a fierce thumb-up kimura that was painful to watch and had those in attendance groaning. Maybe Huerta could star in the new Stretch Armstrong movie.

Former WEC welterweight champion (and Joey from Friends look-alike) Carlos Condit looked shaky in his split-decision win over Jake Ellenberger (a late substitute for an injured Chris Lytle). It was a war from start to finish with Condit (24-5,1-1 in the UFC) getting dropped, rocked and rolled several times in the opening frame. Looking forward to Ellenberger’s (21-5, 0-1 in the UFC) next bout, not so much the over-hyped under-performing Condit.

In the main card opener, Nate Quarry (12-3, 7-2 in the UFC) survived a first-round knockdown and deep rear-naked choke to battle to a unanimous-decision win over a very game Tim Credeur (12-3, 3-1 in the UFC). Quarry dropped Credeur twice in the second and again in the third but Credeur remained busy and threatening on his back throughout. Both fighters were bruised and bloodied by the end, with Quarry’s face actually looking like a horror show in comparison to his opponent’s.
