The Alves and Fitch switch sich

Earlier I reported that the Jon Fitch vs. Ricardo Almeida bout scheduled for UFC 106 was a no go because of an injury to Almeida and that Fitch said he’d be facing a “huge opponent” in his next fight. He wasn’t kidding. At today’s UFC 104 pre-fight press conference UFC president Dana White confirmed that Fitch will meet Thiago Alves at UFC 107.

Alves was supposed to fight Paulo Thiago but Thiago was pulled in favour of a match-up between the number two and number four ranked welterweights. Neither Almeida or Paulo Thiago are top-ten fighters. Both Fitch and Alves have lost to champ Georges St. Pierre but obviously the winner of their fight would move them back into contender status.
