Anthony Johnson loves fried food, misses weight, doesn’t do his job

anthony-johnson

Anthony Johnson’s failure to make weight – and by a whopping six pounds! - for tonight’s UFC 104 bout with Yoshiyuki Yoshida goes beyond merely boneheaded. It’s insulting and disrespectful to his opponent, who agreed prior to yesterday’s weigh-ins to meet Johnson at 176 pounds even though Yoshida tipped the scale at precisely 170. It’s also unprofessional. It’s like a mailman deciding to skip an entire street on his route because his feet are sore. Johnson will forfeit 20 percent of his purse to Yoshida as a result.

Now, what makes this even worse is that Johnson, who walks around at nearly 220 pounds, meaning he was looking at close to a 50-pound weight cut, spoke earlier this week with several media about cutting weight, about how difficult it can be because he loves his deep-fried foods and junk food and stuff. Then there’s the video blog he made just a few days ago in which he said he wasn’t worried about making weight. Looks like somebody has their head up their ass.

Johnson wasn’t the only fighter to miss weight. Josh Neer (156.5) and Gleison Tibau (157) both missed the 156-pound limit for their 155-pound match-up but agreed to fight at their current weights.

Cutting weight is part of the job. It’s no different than the punching and kicking that comes afterward. Fighters need to be doing their damn job.
