Couture vs. Coleman at UFC 109, 11 years after their “best before” date

I can’t think of a fight I’d want to see less than Randy Couture vs. Mark Coleman. Sure, they’re both former champs and MMA legends and UFC Hall of Famers, but watching these two old dogs fight – they have a combined age of 90 – would be like watching two shar peis wrestle over a bone for three rounds. Seriously, who the hell thought this was a good idea?
Okay, the details: Sherdog’s Loretta Hunt is reporting that Couture and Coleman have verbally agreed to meet at UFC 109 on February 6. As the story points out, the pair were originally slated to fight way back at UFC 17 in 1998 until Couture pulled out with an injury and was subbed by Pete Williams, who knocked Coleman into unconsciousness with a well-timed head kick.
After watching Couture hug and grope and cling to Brandon Vera like a drowning man to a life preserver for 15 minutes at last Saturday’s UFC 105 and Coleman keep Stephan Bonnar snug as a bug for three rounds at UFC 100, my interest in this bout – eleven years after its “best before” date – is less than zero.
At least we’ll have the Anderson Silva vs. Vitor Belfort middleweight title bout to look forward to as the card’s headliner, assuming we haven’t fallen asleep.
