Matt Serra confirms UFC 109 bout with Frank Trigg

Frank Trigg would prefer to fight tomato cans in the hopes of sticking around the UFC a little longer and his next opponent, former welterweight champion Matt Serra, is just fine with that.

“If that’s the way he’s thinking, if that’s where his head is at, that he’d rather have an easier opponent so he can get a little winning streak going, then that’s great,” Serra told me during a Toronto press stop to promote his new Round 5 action figure earlier today. “Because he’s not going to find a can in the cage with him in February.”

While neither Trigg or the UFC have confirmed the bout, Serra is adamant that he and Trigg will square off at UFC 109 on February 6. “It’s a done deal as far as I’m concerned and I can’t wait to get back in the octagon,” Serra says. “I think we match up well and will put on a good, exciting fight that the fans will enjoy.”

Serra is currently on a two-fight losing streak that includes his loss to Georges St. Pierre in his first title defense at UFC 83 last year and a unanimous-decision loss to Matt Hughes at UFC 98 in May of this year. Trigg, meanwhile, made his return to the UFC after four years only to lose by first-round TKO to Josh Koscheck at UFC 103.

Trigg has also made comments that a bout with Serra would be a loser-leaves-town proposition, something Serra heartily disagrees with. “He might be looking at this as a one-and-done type thing where he needs the win to stay in the UFC but that’s not how I feel,” he says. “Sure, I’m coming off a couple of losses but they were to GSP and Hughes, two of the top fighters in the division ever, and I actually felt I won the Hughes fight. I certainly don’t feel like I need to win my next fight or I’m out of a job.”

Serra comes across exactly as you see in his TV interviews – a no-nonsense Noo Yawker who says what he thinks and not as short as you’d expect – and I’ll have more from my interview with him in the near future.
