TUF 10 Finale thought 5: Chuck and Tito and my dwindling attention span
I hated The Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights. The fighters were largely unskilled and out of shape, there was too much Kimbo Slice hype and the tension between coaches Rashad Evans and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson fizzled because we already knew they wouldn’t be fighting after the season ended. Now, I have little interest in season eleven, at least as far as the coaches are concerned.
Last night they announced that former friends and octagon rivals Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz would be the coaches. Yawn. I was hoping/expecting Diego Sanchez and Kenny Florian or Clay Guida as coaches, which would have gotten my attention from jump street. This, not so much.
Ortiz was less-than-impressive in his comeback loss to Forrest Griffin at UFC 106 (and he did less to ingratiate himself with his post-fight excuse-making), and Liddell has been Dancing with the Stars since Mauricio “Shogun” Rua had him seeing stars. I wouldn’t want either of them coaching me. Yes, I know a lot of the learning that goes on in the house depends on who the assistant coaches are, but this season proved that if the head coach doesn’t care – hello, Rampage – then things quickly fall apart for the team.
And I have little interest in seeing either of them, especially Ortiz, being given a weekly platform to run their mouths off to hype the eventual fight, Liddell vs. Ortiz III. That’s not an enjoyable hour of television. And I really don’t have much interest in seeing them fight a third time. Of course, they’ll hype it like a classic WWE fight, lots of “clash of the titans” type verbiage that will suck people in. Hopefully the cast members will actually have some talent.
